Alex Morel was born in New York in 1973, grew up in the United States and Dominican Republic. He studied at St. John’s University completing his BFA in 1997, and was part of the full-time program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) during 1994 – 1995, and received his MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University in 2001. From 2001 to 2004, he worked as a photographer on assignment for several international organizations such as the Pan American Health Org. (P.A.H.O.-W.H.O.), Org. of American States (OAS), and Accion International, among others. His personal work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1995. In 2002 he received the ELJ Biennale Award from the Centro Leon Museum, Dom. Rep., and the Fotomuseum in Winterthur in Switzerland presented the first solo survey of his work in 2005. Since 2000, he has taught photography and visual arts, and has been a visiting artist at several educational and cultural institutions in the United States and abroad. He resides in New York, and is currently teaching at St. John’s University.
