Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Roberta Marroquín Doria currently lives in New York City, where she completed the One-Year Certificate Program at ICP (2008-2009). She holds a BA in Communication Science from Monterrey Institute of Technology and a BFA from Parsons School of Design in Paris. Her most recent project, “Dans le Noir”, is an extension of her previous body of work, “Underneath Light.” This group of photographs references the two disparate cultures that coexist in her native Mexico: modern Christianity and the continually popular, pervasive ancient Indian beliefs. In her vision of the commingling of the real and the fantastical that coexist in ordinary life, her work falls squarely in the Latin American tradition of “Magical Realism.”
